Cortona "Island in the Sky"

Let’s go paint under the Tuscan sun in beautiful Cortona, Italy. We will  work to capture not only the beauty and color of the ancient hills, but also bring out the emotion and flavour of the place in our paintings. We will work daily on different scenes and manage to build a substantial portfolio of paintings by the end of the week. This will be a trip of a life-time. Something you will never forget and cherish all the time.

Picture Yourself...
among the sights and sounds of beautiful and romantic Tuscany: olive groves, vineyards, centuries-old buildings, winding streets, texture and vibrant sunlight.
Feel Yourself...
in the warm ambiance of Cortona, overlooking Lake Trasimeno and the Val di Chiana, originally fortified by the Umbrians, claimed by the Etruscans, touched by the Renaissance, almost unchanged for centuries, one of Tuscany's jewels.
Experience...
the joy of painting in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere with the expert instruction of a nationally known artist and instructor and the camaraderie of a small group of learners.
Enjoy...
great Italian food, delightful wines, new friends, breath-taking vistas, history and the hospitality of the people of Cortona.

Meet Zan Barrage...

I was seven when I was given my first watercolour box. It was magical. A tin box with tons of chalky colours and a horrible brush to go with it. But oh did it take me places. I would sit for hours blending colours, attempting to paint the world around me. Today my box is filled with artist quality paints and my brushes are sable and squirrel. My tools have changed, but the journey is still the same: A love for colours and light, and epic struggles to put these on paper.

When I teach, I focus on method and tools. I don’t want you to paint like me, I want to give you the skills you need so you can discover your own voice. You will do many paintings, hone your skills and perfect your personal style.

I paint because I fall in love with a moment. Sometimes I capture it successfully, and other times, too many times, I fail.  I am proud to say that my artwork has seeped into private collections from Australia through Europe to North America. I cherish all my collectors and value their choice to own my artwork. In a way, a work of art is not whole until someone owns it. I am grateful for that.

A classically trained artist, Zan is the recipient of several award for plein air painting in Ontario. He is the founder and past president of Ontario Plein Air Society, a group of Ontario painters dedicated to painting the Canadian landscape from life.

Participant Supply List

What to bring along for painting:

If you have your watercolor tools already, that is great. Please read on and see if you are missing anything below. If you are building your set, please see what you will need to bring below. I encourage you to email me if you have any questions so that we can all be ready and have fun on our trip.

1-     Paints:

The only thing I insist on is Artist Quality paints. Better brushes and paper will make the work easier and more enjoyable. I understand that better tools are not cheap, but they last a long time and you will have better results and have more fun with them.

Basic palette of Artist quality watercolors (Winsor & Newton Artist colours, Daniel Smith Artist Colours, DaVinci Artist Colours or H. Graham Artist Watercolors):

-        Lemon Yellow

-        Indian Yellow

-        Carmine or Per. Alizarin Crimson

-        Cadmium Red Medium

-        Ultramarine Blue

-        Thalo Blue – green shade (also known as Winsor Blue or Phthalocyanine Blue)

Expanded palette of Artist quality watercolors:

-        Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna

-        Burnt Sienna

-        Cadmium Orange or other yellow orange

-        Quinacridone Magenta

-        Sap Green

-        Cobalt Turquoise

2- Brushes (Synthetic or natural hair brushes):

-        Round #8, # 10 or #12 (Synthetic, red sable or Kolinsky sable )

-        Dagger Brush ¼” (Synthetic or mixed hair)

-        Round wash brush (quill) – Small, medium and Large size (Soft synthetic, mixed hair or squirrel hair) Alternatively, you can also get goat hair hack brushes.

-        Any other brushes you like. Just make sure they are good quality and come to a sharp point or edge.

3- Paper:

-        1 x Arches Cold Pressed (or Rough) 140Lb block 7”x10”

-        1 x Arches Cold Pressed (or Rough) 140Lb block 9”x12”

-        1 x Arches Cold Pressed (or Rough) 140Lb block 10”x14”

4- Palette:

A folding palette with deep wells and plenty of mixing area is ideal. I prefer metal palettes that hold full pans of colour. You will need to fill the pans beforehand and let them dry in place. Please bring your tube colours as well to replenish.

5- Portable easel or pochade and potable water can

6- Green painters tape

7- Towel, Rags, Paper towels

8- Pencil (2b)

9- Small sketch book

10- Hat, sun screen, glasses, smile

What to leave behind:

-        Trouble

-        Work

-        Tension

-        Pain

About Cortona

Cortona is one of the true jewels of the Tuscan “hill towns.”    Cortona, which is often called the “City of Art,” has its origin as an Etruscan city that pre-dates Roman times with sections of its walls dating back some 2500 years.  As is typical of Tuscan hill-towns, Cortona is a walled city that, for purposes of defense, was built atop a prominent geographical point. The stone buildings and streets not only have the romance, style, and charm that are particular to Tuscany, but also speak of the lives and times Cortona has witnessed. An encounter with Cortona is an encounter with music & art, with history and with spirituality. Getting to know this timeless city is a real rediscovery of our past. Cortona offers testimony to its history as well as an enchanting view of the landscape enclosed by Lake Trasimeno and the Apennine mountains.
