Art at the Speed of Life
Art at the Speed of Life

Come with me on the trip of a lifetime as we Create Art at the Speed of Life through Mixed Media Art Journaling inspired by beautiful Tuscany, Italy!

Creating Art at the Speed of Life is about more than just creating art; it’s about finding the creative spirit that dwells within and feeding it on a daily basis. By incorporating daily sketching into our itinerary and expanding on it while we take field trips, feast on Italian foods and wine, and even learn something about Italian cooking, we will explore many mixed media techniques and mediums that both make art journaling exciting and doable! I’ve chosen one of my favorite journals to be our constant companion on this epic journey and it will provide us both a place to sketch and play with mixed media. I‘ll show you how to create you your own Personal Paint Palette right in your journal using Peerless Watercolor papers and Liquid Pencil Sketching Ink and we’ll make ‘Journal to Go Kits’ to take on our field trips through Tuscany, Italy.

Spend a week with Pam, creating Art at the Speed of Life, Italian Life that is! Inspired by the beautiful Italian cities of Florence and Cortona you can explore many mixed media techniques and begin a habit of creating daily in the windows of time that life gives you. Indulge in Italian foods and wine while your body is pampered and your creative spirit is inspired! Pam will share a variety of mixed media techniques as well as encourage and explore daily sketching to exercise those artistic muscles. She’ll be bringing with her some exciting new mixed media products including her new line of Liquid Pencil Sketching Ink and Mixed Media Adhesive to show you innovative and easy techniques to make the most of creating Art at the Speed of Life in while under the Tuscan Sun. All of the sketching and mixed media play will be captured in your Art Journal as a lasting keepsake and reference tool for future use. Enroll early as this small group workshop is limited to allow for plenty of one on one instruction!

ALL CLASS MATERIALS WILL BE SUPPLIED BY INSTRUCTOR!

 Picture Yourself...
among the sights and sounds of beautiful and romantic Tuscany: olive groves, vineyards, centuries-old buildings, winding streets, texture and vibrant sunlight.

 Feel Yourself...
in the warm ambience of Cortona, overlooking Lake Trasimeno and the Val di Chiana, originally fortified by the Umbrians, claimed by the Etruscans, touched by the Renaissance.   Almost unchanged for centuries, Cortona is one of Tuscany's jewels.

 Experience...
the joy of painting en plein air yourself in a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere with the expert instruction of a nationally known artist and instructor and the camaraderie friendship of a small group of learners and seekers.

Enjoy...
great Italian food, delightful wines, new friends, breath-taking vistas, history and the hospitality of the people of Cortona.

-9:00a-12:00p Morning Session

Class kits will be handed out including a signed copy of my book, ‘Art at the Speed of Life’

We will spend the morning session constructing our own personal paint palettes right in our journals and with a twist-we’ll add a pocket to the journal for the memorabilia we’ll no doubt pick up on our outings. I will introduce my line of Sketch Ink from Derivan Liquid Pencil and we will begin to explore its properties and the tools we will use to apply it. No pencils needed! Derivan Liquid Pencil is actual graphite in a paint-like form. My new line of Sketch Ink products provides a user friendly way to apply this medium in a more liquid form. Using both Permanent and Rewettable formulas, we will smudge, erase, lift off, burnish and more.

-1:00p Lunch

-3:00-6:00p Afternoon Session

Now that everyone has had a chance to play with the Sketch Ink, we will begin our first journal pages, discussing our views on what Art Journaling means to us and how we each find ways or hope to find ways, to incorporate it into our daily lives. This will become a foundation for our pages as we layer various fluid media and water soluble media on top, experimenting with the fun things I’ve provided in our class kits.

Even if you’ve never drawn a face before, I’ll show you how to use my Portrait Sketch Stamps to create a one of a kind face. Meet your hosts in Tuscany...

Angela Lucani was born and raised in Cortona and never tires of living within the walls of this vibrant Tuscan hilltown! She trained as an elementary school teacher and taught in various locals within Cortona from its mountain villages to the growing post-war part of Cortona known as Camucia. Angela has always been passionate about Tuscan cooking, which she began to learn at an early age aiding her mother in the kitchen. She maintains respect for local cooking traditions and recipes and shares that with Italians and foreign visitors through cooking classes conducted both in Italy and in America.
She has extensive knowledge of Cortona's various areas, from the mountains to the fertile Val di Chiana, and continues to learn about its long and colorful history. She is also passionate about travel and enjoys learning about and experiencing customs, traditions and characteristics of other countries, cultures & people. Her travels destinations have included the United States, England, Egypt, South America, France, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Greece. She enjoys serving as a bridge between visitors to Tuscany and the local culture.

Patrick Mahoney (Miami University BA'80, MA'82) lives  in Cortona where he continues a thirty-year  career in the field of Arts & Entertainment producing events, workshops and tours and providing opportunities to share the Italy experience with travelers, artists and people who share his interests for foods, wine, art, culture. Patrick's passion is to conceive and realize various ways in which the human spirit can express and demonstrate its capacity to create. His ability to fearlessly think, conceive, and work "out of the box" has earned him the attention of artists & musicians, colleges & universities, public & private organizations, and business and industry.  Patrick brings integrity and a unique vision to Toscana Americana and he is committed to realizing the opportunity for participants to create in an atmosphere of peace, joy, respect and mutual support. As a "slow traveler" and a supporter of  "slow food" Mr. Mahoney rides trains, walks, lingers over lunch, dinner or a cup of espresso, stops to smell the roses and savors the sensory feast wherever he is!

About Cortona...

Cortona is one of the true jewels of the Tuscan “hill towns.”    Cortona, which is often called the “City of Art,” has its origin as an Etruscan city that pre-dates Roman times with sections of its walls dating back some 2500 years.  As is typical of Tuscan hill-towns, Cortona is a walled city that, for purposes of defense, was built atop a prominent geographical point. The stone buildings and streets not only have the romance, style, and charm that are particular to Tuscany, but also speak of the lives and times Cortona has witnessed. An encounter with Cortona is an encounter with music & art, with history and with spirituality. Getting to know this timeless city is a real rediscovery of our past. Cortona offers testimony to its history as well as an enchanting view of the landscape enclosed by Lake Trasimeno and the Apennine mountains.
