Meet Colette George
Meet Colette George
Cathedral of Dreams
in Cortona

Mixed media and collage
Colette George & Lisa Bebi
September 18-25, 2010
Cortona, Italy

Welcome to da hood- Sainthood, a week-long unforgettable artist retreat.

The Cathedral of Dreams Workshop, Cortona, is a once in a lifetime experience that will transport you on the wings of unusual mixed media methods to a higher artistic realm.

Baptize yourself in the inimitable styles of both Saints; Lisa Bebi & Colette George. Come, take part in the performance of miracles and absolve the sins of those past.

Learn from the Holy Mother and Master Originator St. Lisa, the miraculous transmogrifying Paint-Over technique. Create your crumbling wall substrates as the Venerable St. Colette communes authentic aging wall techniques on canvas and edging techniques as both explore the fine art and liberation in wine washing. (Becoming one with the wine is strongly encouraged.) For the Blessed Finale St. Lisa will teach you to take these photos as a basis for a painting, then St. Colette will teach you how to integrate the painting and depict yourself as Saint (with heroic virtue) to create your own beautiful Icon Tableau.

Students will be using captured digital imagery from local ancient cathedrals to provide the basis for class artwork.

Peace be with you.  And also with you.

Mixed media and collage tend to go hand in hand, nearly every  project.

Learn the steps in using found images to create a series of paper based altered art.

Wine and Chocolate reception. (Because it does bear repeating)

Day 1 Am Colette
All hostages will create an aged rose icon on a canvas sheet support using Colette's original kit consisting of rose tissue imagery, canvas sheeting, crackle medium. Coordinating tags will be created with each kit. Also we will learn to use a special edging techniques that works to eliminate the need for frames.
(project will dry over night)

Day 1 Pm Lisa
Lisa will walk everyone through the paintover process- we will produce up to 3 paintovers on paper inbetween laughs and joke telling and trips to the bathroom.
(note: coffee will be served all day and wine (of course) will always be available - er, even for the students!!).

DAY 2 MORNING: Colette and Lisa will be pied pipers and lead everyone into town to paw, pilfer, gather and forage for images and misc. from local Italian sites and Cathedrals for additional class projects. As we go, Lisa and Colette will provide tips for collecting artwork possibilities to be used now and later on.

DAY 2PM Lisa will divulge her top secret techniques and methods of image reproduction and copying used in preparation for paintover painting and play. You will learn what is "OK" to use in your art without asking permission and what might be questionable-- and how to get permission or how to get around asking. Then, we will do more paintovers! using our found and or manipulated imagery.

Also that day, we will take headshots of each other to use on the last (supper, i mean) day, Finale Sainted project.

Colette: Students will finish the last step in the aging process to create authentic crumbling samples. The Rose Canvas project.

Day 3 AM: Taking some of the finished paintovers from Lisa class (Day 1) We'll decoupage canvas board as first element in this mixed media work. We will explore various texturing compounds and learn by adding colors using untraditional methods. And here is where more wine comes in.
LISA: Yes, let's bring in the wine...

Day 3 PM WINE TASTING *hic* Providing we're not all hammered beyond repair, we will explore art through inebriation, Lisa will use headshots for the base of - you guessed it - more paintovers!!!! and to use in Colette's Day 5 Awesome Icon project.

Day 4
Play day trip around Florence. Utterances to the blessed mother will be heard for those nursing epic hangovers. But, that won't be you babe.

Day 5 AM and PM Colette and Lisa together:
Cathedral images, found and manipulated imagery and /or headshots from Lisa's classes will be worked up with joint compound, stains and wax in Colette's awesome icon project!
You might just find yourself sainted!

About Cortona

Cortona is one of the true jewels of the Tuscan “hill towns.”    Cortona, which is often called the “City of Art,” has its origin as an Etruscan city that pre-dates Roman times with sections of its walls dating back some 2500 years.  As is typical of Tuscan hill-towns, Cortona is a walled city that, for purposes of defense, was built atop a prominent geographical point. The stone buildings and streets not only have the romance, style, and charm that are particular to Tuscany, but also speak of the lives and times Cortona has witnessed. An encounter with Cortona is an encounter with music & art, with history and with spirituality. Getting to know this timeless city is a real rediscovery of our past. Cortona offers testimony to its history as well as an enchanting view of the landscape enclosed by Lake Trasimeno and the Apennine mountains.
