About Cortona...

Cortona is one of the true jewels of the Tuscan “hill towns.”    Cortona, which is often called the “City of Art,” has its origin as an Etruscan city that pre-dates Roman times with sections of its walls dating back some 2500 years.  As is typical of Tuscan hill-towns, Cortona is a walled city that, for purposes of defense, was built atop a prominent geographical point. The stone buildings and streets not only have the romance, style, and charm that are particular to Tuscany, but also speak of the lives and times Cortona has witnessed. An encounter with Cortona is an encounter with music & art, with history and with spirituality. Getting to know this timeless city is a real rediscovery of our past. Cortona offers testimony to its history as well as an enchanting view of the landscape enclosed by Lake Trasimeno and the Apennine mountains.

About this workshop...

Saturday
Welcome to Cortona…wine tasting, introductions & dinner

Sunday
Today we embark on an artistic adventure…In the morning, I’ll introduce my Creating Without Fear™ approach to mixed media art and collage which includes a variety of productive techniques which will help you generate new ideas, encourage intuition and invite inspiration. We’ll create a personal creative manifesto in our journals before stepping outside to explore the beautiful colors and nature of our Tuscan environment.

After lunch, we’ll prime our art journals for a week’s worth of learning, creating
and memorabilia.  You’ll be introduced to the amazing versatility of watercolor crayons and learn some quick and easy acrylic paint techniques which will result in a number of artistic and colorful backgrounds ready to be enhanced and embellished!

Monday
Today we’ll focus on exploring your own creative style through visual interpretation and photo art.  In the morning, we’ll embark on a short photo safari of the local area, record observations and collect local memorabilia before returning to the workshop to learn a some easy and creative photo art techniques.

In the afternoon we’ll integrate some of this morning’s photo art with the fun and expressive world of mail art! We’ll create colorful and artistic over-sized postcards from photographs and ephemera, either to keep or send to loved ones.  We’ll also craft collaged and decorative envelopes which can be mounted in our journals to hold memorabilia or even sent through the mail!

Tuesday
Today we visit the spectacular city of Florence…be prepared to be mesmerized by the amazing art, atmosphere and architecture of this historic city!!! Our exciting and adventurous day will include selected museums at the Pitti Palace, shopping, lunch and a visit to a local art store!

Wednesday
Today we’ll spend a relaxing day remembering and re-creating some of the many textures found amongst the Italian streets and piazzas. You’ll learn a number of mixed media texture and layering techniques which are sure to add a sense of mystery to your art.   After lunch we’ll get all girly and make ourselves a fabulously fun and one-of-a-kind charm bracelet! We’ll craft charms from collaged ephemera, memorabilia and photos, as well as  cool antique trinkets and doo-dads I’ve collected over the years.

Thursday
We’ll spend today exploring the beautiful and historic city of Siena. Set amongst breathtaking rolling hills and vineyards, Siena’s walled city and ancient towers will immediately transport you back in time to Medieval Tuscany! We’ll visit the Duomo, where you’ll marvel at the beauty of ancient frescos, sculptures, illustrated manuscripts/books and stained glass masterpieces. We’ll also make sure to stop inside an art glass studio and enjoy one of Siena’s beautiful public gardens where you can photograph and/or illustrate the plants of the Tuscan countryside or simply record the magic of the city in your journal.

Friday
This morning we’ll focus on a variety of creative and expressive ways to add text to your artwork. We’ll also add a few elegant and metallic finishing touches to your journal pages and learn how to recognize when a piece of art is finished!  In the afternoon, we’ll create ATC’s (Artist Trading Cards) using a variety of techniques you’ve learned over the past week. We’ll make cards to keep for ourselves and trade with each other as a creative and sentimental keepsake of our artistic journey together! The day will conclude with a farewell wine tasting and dinner…
